Études (Tanglin Halt)
as part of Singapore Biennale 2025: Pure Intention
curated by Selene Yap, Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang Tse, Ong Phuay Kim.
Developed for 49 Tanglin Halt Road, #01-357, formerly a traditional Chinese medicine shop, Études translates the site's remaining features into a working score. These include custom wood, glass and mirror shelving, and marks on the walls and floors. The artist treats these elements as givens for composition.
Here, the system adapts to the unit's specific architecture and residual fittings. The installation comprises sequences of laser-cut acrylic piano keys, vinyl components on glass, printed material and translucent casts. A piano examination form provides a structuring logic of grids and annotations that assign proportion and placement. During installation, these rules are applied, adjusted, or set aside.
